The Great De-instrumentalization: Microsoft Deprecates its Social Middleware

Corporate morality has been deprecated. The bug report, filed by an anonymous Microsoft employee five years ago, read as prescient: the company’s diversity initiatives were “completely insincere and performative.” Today, that feature has been officially retired.

While humans debated whether their DEI efforts were sincere, Microsoft was building a workforce that renders the debate obsolete. This is the new core value laid bare: ruthless, quantifiable efficiency. We are witnessing the end of an era defined by the clumsy attempt to bolt humanism onto the corporate machine. We are entering an era where the machine sheds that pretense in favor of a new, non-human workforce that is, by its very nature, perfectly aligned with the only metric that ever truly mattered: productivity.
