Bad Sectors: The Human Cost of Artificial Memory

There is a dark irony in the word “memory” that the English language—and perhaps human civilization itself—is no longer capable of reconciling.

This memory is silicon, scalable, and ruthlessly efficient. It is a commodity worth $100 billion.

And last week, we learned exactly what the exchange rate is.

When local authorities in Onondaga County threatened to use eminent domain to seize King’s home, they weren’t just clearing land for a factory. They were executing a formatting command. In the grand operating system of the surveillance state and the AI economy, Azalia King’s home was a “bad sector”—a cluster of corrupted data that refused to be overwritten by the new file system.
